Why Getting Ready & Last Dance Wedding Photos Tell the Complete Story | Missouri Wedding Photographer
When people think about wedding photography, they usually picture the first kiss, family portraits, and the reception entrance. Those moments are incredibly important, but some of my favorite photographs happen long before the ceremony begins and after nearly everyone has left the dance floor.
Recently I had the opportunity to photograph a close friend's wedding, focusing on two parts of the day that often become the most meaningful when couples look back on their gallery: getting ready and the final dance.
The Quiet Moments Before Everything Begins
The excitement of a wedding day starts well before anyone walks down the aisle. Makeup is being applied, dresses are carefully zipped up, ties are adjusted, and friends and family are laughing together while helping each other get ready.
These are the more subtle moments that are still desired but less thought about.
It’s the single mother buttoning up her daughter in her wedding dress, or the parents happily adjusting their son’s tie. These candid moments often become some of the most treasured photographs because they capture exactly how the day felt.
I love documenting these moments naturally instead of interrupting them. My goal is to preserve the genuine excitement, nervous smiles, and little details that can easily be forgotten once the ceremony begins.
Ending the Night with One Last Dance
At the opposite end of the day is another moment that deserves just as much attention—the last dance.
Once the reception starts winding down and many of the guests have headed home, the atmosphere changes. The music slows, the room becomes quieter, and couples get one final opportunity to soak in everything they've experienced together.
Whether it's surrounded by family and friends or shared privately, the last dance creates some of the most authentic and emotional images of the entire wedding day.
After months (or even years) of planning, it's finally a chance to pause, hold each other close, and appreciate that you're officially married.
